Before the Session

When getting ready for your session, you must first decide what type of photograph you want. For a somewhat dramatic look, a  black background is wonderful. If this is what you choose, I suggest that you dress your child in dark solid color clothing. Avoid logos, plaids, stripes, and busy patterns as these distract from the beauty and simplicity of your child's face. For a white background, dress in solid light colored clothing. In most cases skin looks better than anything  - I prefer newborns and most children under one in their birthday suits, and I always encourage bare feet for everyone. If you are unsure about what type of photograph you want, please look at the Gallery for some ideas.

The Session

Sessions may last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. I strive to create a relaxed environment for each photo session as often the best shots occur when everyone has forgotten about the camera and can truly be themselves.  To this end, I ask that parents limit the number of people present during the shoot, and not make a big deal about the session ahead of time with their children (sometimes even little ones can feel pressured). In addition, I may ask that parents go to another room so that I can have some time to chat and photograph their child without the antics that can occur when children know Mom or Dad is watching them. It's one of those utterly frustrating facts of parenthood that children are sometimes calmer and more relaxed when their parents aren't around. In general, I use very simple props (or often none at all) when photographing. However, if your child has a special toy or memento that you want to include, by all means bring it!  Anything that you can think of to make your portraits reflect this special stage in your child's life should be considered and discussed.

After the Session

After your session, I will post your images on a private page of this website for one week only as a preview for your scheduled proofing session. Your proofing session is an appointment to view your printed originals and place your order.   I will be happy to make suggestions/recommendations regarding framing, photo choices, appropriate sizes, cropping, and retouching if desired. Payment for all prints ordered is due at this time.  All images are kept on file for 1 year after each session should you request reprints; however, a minimum purchase amount of $75 is required for additional orders.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or to schedule  your portrait session.
